Hullo! and a question on icons!

Hiya! I only really gave Gintama a chance this year and after some 40+ episodes I realized I'd fallen for it good and proper. Now with the recent Tumblr unpleasantness, I would love to find people on other platforms to talk to about the series. I just hope someone out there will see this and respond...

Now to a specific question. Does anyone have Gintama icons that aren't stored on Photobucket and which it's fine to use? Or know where such icons can be found? I will credit the icon-maker, naturally.

i just happened to see this on the latest stuff page but you are not alone in loving Gintama!! it has such a unique brand of humour that i rarely see in Japanese works. i think the closest thing i can think of is Cromartie High School

Yeah, Gintama is just fantastic. I'm also on a bit of a Ranma 1/2 nostalgia kick right now, and that manga is legit one of the funniest titles I've ever read. But Gintama still blows it out of water when it comes to making you laugh out loud for so many things. And that's not even going into its more heartbreaking serious moments... I haven't read or watched Cromartie High School, though.

It's fine re the icons! It's not a burning need, it's just that now that I'm back in journalspace I remember that having fandom-relevant icons can be neat. :D

man Ranma, only watched a couple of episodes way back when but sadly it didn't really catch me - oughta try it again. i like the art style a lot though. yeah same there's so few anime that just make ya cackle out loud! honestly i've never been particularly hard for the serious arcs and all BUT...i think it's just because they're so typically shounen in contrast to the utter weirdness of the rest of the show that it throws me off. shounen is alright but it's not my favourite thing. nonetheless, i have shed a tear and had some feels over the serious Gintama parts, and it helps give depth to the characters. ie. i'm a reeaaal sucker for Gintoki and Otose's dynamic and her story...ramble ramble.

as for Cromartie, there's prooobably a manga, though i've only seen the anime. the episodes are quite short. i recommended it if you'd like to spend some minutes going "what the hell."

aaw yeah. real neat that you can have multiple icons too.

Try the Ranma manga instead of the anime! The manga is a lot better.

Gintoki's and Otose's dynamics are awesome, and the Four Devas arc was so good. Do you read fics any? I can very much recommend this fic on the two of them, from Otose's POV.

yesss. i've read some fics but i'll be honest, they were all Hijikata/Gintoki centric because i'm very obsessed with rival/antagonistic relationships, but there was this reaaally good author (who deleted ALL their stuff fairly recently) that involved Otose a lot and meaningfully. but a fic actually focused on Gintoki and Otose sounds really nice, and gasp from Otose's point of view. got my interest.

I can understand that re focusing on just one ship or one aspect of a canon in fic. For some fandoms I don't feel I have to read fics at all, for others I might just do it if it's by a writer I already know about, and for some I only want to read gen stuff, or just that one ship, even if there were other pairings I like in canon.

For me with Gintama it's mostly just gen stuff and Gintoki/Katsura that I've looked at in fics (with occasional exceptions), even though there are other ships I think are cool/cute/intriguing, and there aren't too many Gintama ships I actively dislike. Gintoki/Hijikata is a fine ship, it just hasn't become my favoured cup of tea for whatever reason. So far at least!

god i bet Gintama has some excellent gen stuff. i love Katsura and that is a v nice pairing too. yeah, honestly i could get down with almost any Gintama pairing, except ones with Kagura because shE IS CHILD MY DAUGHTER. i see a lot of Sougo/Kagura and like...i get it, i can see why i s'ppose, but also....i can't...

Two great genfics are the wonderful "Encore, or Else" (by naye, who wrote that Otose fic I linked to), and the fantastic "Pandemonium" by xparrot. Both have a lot of action and suspense and the bond between the Odd Jobs Trio is the main focus. "Pandemonium" is much longer and also features the Shinsengumi prominently, including having Hijikata sensing a mental connection to Gintoki (no more details).

Yeah... I think a lot of those who ship say Sougo/Kagura picture her as being older, but with the same basic dynamics with Sougo which are pretty equal. I don't mind it, but it also isn't really my cup of tea. (Have you caught up with the manga, by the way? Or the anime?)

yeah highly likely. isn't there a movie that has older Kagura aside from just that one ep? yeah idm either, but not sippin' that tea right there with ya. i have noooot read the manga at all, for shame. i watch Gintama with my roommate and we got pretty far in but i do not remember, it's been a while. i feel bad watching it without him and then with college and our schedules not aligning and other stuff i haven't been able to watch in a while ): so i'm probably way behind. we actually watched one ep the other day, just picking a random one, which had robot!Yamazaki and i had no idea that he was a robot now so if that gives a clue...i hope that isn't a spoiler for you as it was for me sheeyit

Oh yes! You've got to watch the second Gintama movie, it's really amazing!

The anime currently is not that behind the manga. Do you remember approximately the last episode you watched before you skipped ahead and was spoiled with that one newer episode? Gintama has been really plot-heavy for a good while now, so it's not as easy to pick random episodes to watch when it comes to the later one.

Not for Gintoki, unfortunately - it was a smut game and I didn't play him super long there because I am not good enough at wordplay, heh.

Ah, too bad! But I understand. I find him challenging to write in fics* for similar reasons.

Yeah, the humor and wordplay is honestly one of my favorite things about Gintama (and why I mostly watch the anime rather than read the manga - the seiyuu bring so much to those extended jokes), but it's hard to mimic.
